How EMDR Works
EMDR therapy involves a structured eight-phase approach that guides clients through the process of reprocessing traumatic memories. During sessions, clients are encouraged to safely recall, but not relive, distressing events while simultaneously engaging in bilateral stimulation, typically through guided eye movements. This dual attention helps to facilitate the storing of traumatic memories along new neural pathways, reducing their emotional charge when they get triggered.
The phases of EMDR include history-taking, preparation and education, assessment, desensitization and reprocessing, installation, body scan, closure and stabilization, and reevaluation. Each phase is designed to ensure that clients feel safe, allowing them to end the process if they are becoming overwhelmed.
Benefits of EMDR for Trauma and PTSD
EMDR offers numerous benefits for people struggling with trauma and PTSD. One of the most significant advantages is its ability to provide rapid relief from distressing symptoms. Many clients report experiencing a reduction in anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and emotional distress after just a few sessions. This swift progress can be incredibly empowering, helping people find the motivation for continued healing.
Another reason Boca Raton Counseling Center clients often like EMDR is its focus on the mind-body connection. By addressing both the cognitive and physical aspects of trauma, EMDR helps people process their experiences holistically. This approach can lead to lasting changes in how much tension clients feel is being held in their bodies and makes them less likely to experience panic attacks and trauma symptoms such as an elevated heart rate.
Additionally, EMDR does not require clients to describe their experiences in as much detail as talk therapy. While Dustin still needs to know what memory you are trying to reprocess, EMDR is not meant to make you feel as if you are back in the moment. Once a traumatic memory has been processed, you may feel more comfortable exploring how it affected you.
